Who are we?

Lodge House B&B provides a peaceful setting for our guests to enjoy the many splendors of the beautiful Blackdown Hills.

Neil and Kathy Arnold

A warm welcome

Your hosts are Neil and Kathy Arnold who will assure you of a warm welcome. Neil retired early from his job as an aerospace industry project manager and Kathy is a complementary therapist.

We moved to Buckland St Mary from Slough, Berkshire in January 2010 and bought Lodge House with a view to renovating it and starting up a B&B.

Forest and Toto the Cats

Forest and Toto the Cats

You will also be welcomed by Forest, our new black semi-long-haired cat, who is very friendly. We also have a new long haired black cat called Toto who came to us from Ferne Animal Sanctuary in April 2015.

Fresh eggs from the hens

Fresh free range eggs

We keep a 20 or so hens free range to provide fresh eggs for breakfast. Our first 8 hens were rescued from a farm that produced eggs for a major supermarket, but now we have some pure breeds too and we get different coloured eggs, blue and olive and various shades of brown. They all have a lovely life with good food, space to run around and fresh air in return for several eggs every day.

Buckland St Mary

The village of Buckland St Mary

Buckland St Mary is a village of only 450 inhabitants, but is spread over a large area. In the centre of the village is a large Victorian Church and a thriving village school. This is a rural area where the majority of farming is dairy.

Just minutes from the A303 yet Lodge House is a peaceful relaxing place to stay. (See our video on the "Bookings" page of how to drive into Lodge House from the A303)

The house dates back to the 1750’s and retains fine original features. We are approx 750 feet above sea level here, and the air is clean and pure. A footpath runs past our front door and the only traffic is the occasional walker or horse rider. The views from here are amazing, the peace and tranquility are second to none, making Lodge House B&B an ideal place for a stress-relieving break, away from the hustle and bustle of busy everyday life.

When our guests arrive we want them to relax, leave their troubles at the door and step into a world of home comfort and rest. As owners we intend to see that every attention is paid to detail and service.

We offer a full English breakfast each morning, with a vegetarian and light option, using local produce where possible, free range eggs from our own hens, homemade bread and home made preserves from our fruit trees and bushes when available and our own honey. Our 3 rooms are south-facing, comfortable guest bedrooms with antique furniture and modern touches and are ready to embrace the individual who is looking for peace and quiet, or the more adventurous person who likes to be active such as walkers and cyclists. Two rooms have adjacent private bathrooms that have been furnished to a high specification and the 2nd floor Blue room is ensuite.

We offer complementary therapies such as Reflexology, Indian Head Massage and Aromatherapy massage to guests at an additional cost.

If you are coming from London or SE England, then we are approximately a 2 ½ to 3 hours drive away and is a good stopping of point en route to Cornwall. The Blackdown Hills can seem like a different world and is attractive to those people who have the need to get away but do not have the time to go too far.

Therapeutic Breaks
Because of the complementary therapies we offer, Lodge House B&B is a unique choice for people looking for a relaxing break.

Active vacationers
As we have secure stables where bicycles could be locked away safely we encourage guests who are cyclists and ramblers/walkers who are looking for a more active break. We are a popular stop off for those doing the Lands End to John O'Groats ride.

Escaping to the Country?                                                                                                                                                               Thinking of relocating to Somerset, East Devon or Dorset?  Then why not come and base yourselves at our B&B for a couple of days.  We can give you local knowledge and the benefit of our experience of doing this 4 years ago. We can get the local property papers for you too.  We are located in South Somerset by the Devon border, Bridport and the South Coast are 20 miles away and the North Somerset area (Minehead location) is some 25 miles away. Come and see what the local area has to offer.

Want to take on an eco project?                                                                                                                                                                      Come and see our chickens, woods, our raised vegetable beds and our own water supply.  We have wellies we can lend you as we show you around and give you an idea of some of the issues you might be up against if you took on a similar project.

Location                                                                                                                                                                                                                  The sheer beauty of our setting must be experienced and enjoyed.
